Our Approach

CPW joined this architect-led new build at the Selly Oak campus - a vibrant school and sixth form college accommodating 1150 students and staff.

The building combines classrooms and teaching space with specialist music rooms, science laboratories, and art rooms. A unique IT innovation room makes space for exciting new learning experiences.

Using passive design principles, we incorporated exposed thermal mass and mixed mode ventilation to regulate internal temperatures, allowing students and staff to perform at their best.

Orienting the building to minimise solar impact, improving the air tightness, and utilising exposed mass to aid cooling all contributed to our overall goal of minimising the project’s carbon footprint.

Adding 200m² of photovoltaic panels allowed us to maximise renewable energy used by the development.

We worked closely with the design team and client to keep the project aligned with tight timeframes and a strict budget without compromising on quality or sustainability.

The quality of the environment allows students and staff to perform at their best and we we’re further pleased that the project acquired BREEAM Very Good and EPC B ratings as a result of our careful approach to sustainable design.
