COP26 - 02/11/21
By Hannah Beirne
Today was a day for venturing. I stopped by some of the fringe events being set up around the city, including the Sustainable Glasgow Landing Hub. The Hub is host to several interesting projects, including the COP26 House, a wooden constriction that is innovative to its’ core, designed with circularity and achieves low embodied carbon in its’ design. This extends to the building services: the ventilation unit has been located to reduce the length of ductwork needed, and infrared panel radiators supply heating which negates the need for any pipework!
There were art installations dotted elsewhere on the site, including a 5-metre tall poem urging divestment from fossil fuels, (a main contributor?) to greenhouse gas emissions. A vertical farm showcased how food can be grown within city limits, reducing transport distances and the carbon footprint and food waste that results.
The day ended with the launch of the ‘Architectures of Crisis: Hopes & Visions’ exhibition hosted by the Architects Climate Action Network. The exhibition showcases ACAN’s campaigns, chapters, and thematic groups, and they outlined the actions they were taking on key topics such as retrofitting. We were all encouraged to write down our own hopes, as well as cathartic exercise to admit our own ‘sins’ against the climate (such as a penchant for authentic French cheese).
