CPW’s healthcare work acknowledged in book celebrating 75 years of NHS

We are set to be featured in Celebrating 75 Years of the National Health Service in recognition of the company’s strong relationship with the NHS, supporting healthcare estates to modernise sustainably and prioritise wellbeing through building services.

Andy Hill, Director, was interviewed for the book, which will be unveiled at Westminster Abbey on 6 September 2023.

Andy said: “We are proud to be recognised in Celebrating 75 Years of the National Health Service for our long history working with healthcare estates.

“Many of these hospitals, surgeries and specialists units are heavily reliant on fossil-fuels with outdated and in-efficient services, while global energy costs continue to rise. We have made it our mission to support healthcare estates to find pathways to net zero, making the leap to low-carbon, renewable solutions that are better for the planet and often better for the comfort and wellbeing of the patients and staff. As a non-stop, critical service, it’s also imperative that we design a pathway with end-users in mind, allowing for as little disruption as possible.”

This was the case with a redevelopment project CPW delivered at Kettering General Hospital. The project consisted of the replacement of aging site-wide energy infrastructure, and the wider development of a net zero carbon pathway for scope 1 & 2 emissions to ensure that the Trust could achieve the NHS Net Zero Target of an 80% reduction by 2032, and being net zero in operational carbon by 2040.

After extensive evaluation and modelling, the CPW team delivered a plan that would allow for existing building stock to be refurbished in the short-term without impacting peak loads, before fully adopting the low-carbon measures long-term that would help them achieve their net zero targets. The decision was made to utilise a new low temperature district heating network that would be served by ammonia driven, high temperature, air source heat pumps (ASHPs) – a first for the NHS nationally.

“More recently, we have also been supporting some of our NHS estates colleagues with developing their apprenticeship programme. Our own programme has been going for over 25 years and ensures a flow of young talent that we can train in our sustainable approaches, bridging the skills gap present in the industry.

“It’s a huge achievement to have our work in this sector recognised and we look forward to collaborating further with NHS Trusts to help them meet their net zero goals.”
