National Apprenticeship Week 2024: A Spotlight on... Liviya Clempson, our Trainee HR Support

With National Apprenticeship Week 2024 in full swing, we dive into the diverse apprenticeship opportunities offered by CPW, extending beyond engineering. In this spotlight, we had a conversation with Liviya Clempson, our Trainee HR Support, who generously shares her experiences and insights into the apprenticeship journey so far. Whether your interest lies in engineering or another sector, Liv's story provides guidance and inspiration for those looking to embark on an apprenticeship path.

What is your role and what does it involve?

I work in the HR department, as Trainee HR Support and I’m currently studying my level 3 CIPD. I attend college once a week - this is when I usually block out some study time in the afternoon, after attending my morning classes. The balance between work and study is great, and college integrates nicely into my working week.

My role consists of organising and attending meetings, dealing with HR enquiries whether this is regarding sickness or holiday booking, collating reports and to ensure all staff feel supported – particularly new starters. I complete new employee inductions, coordinate work experience, update personal records and ensure that any new starters feel settled within the business and their new team.

Tell us about your career journey – where did it start, and why did you opt for the apprenticeship route?

My passion career-wise has always centered around working with people and helping individuals to unlock their full potential. Initially, after completing my GCSEs and A-levels the idea of continued full-time education didn’t resonate with me. I craved a more practical, hands-on approach to learning. Wanting to gain knowledge on the job, I began exploring other avenues which led me to discover Human Resources .

Additionally, with there being a lack of specialised HR qualifications within university programmes at the time, this further reinforced my decision to pursue other routes, in terms of becoming qualified. Naturally, I started looking into apprenticeships– and I haven’t looked back since!

The practical experience that I've gained at CPW has essentially laid the foundation for my career in HR – and I firmly believe that university isn't the only route to career success; it's not for everyone and shouldn’t have to be.

What was it that drew you to CPW?

The main aspect that initially attracted me to CPW is the fact that it’s very much a 'people-oriented' company. This strongly resonated with me, so much so – that it was one of the deciding factors for me when considering which apprenticeship scheme to enrol in. It was an instantaneous connection from the start; I felt welcome the moment I walked through the door, and the rest, as they say, is history!

What are the biggest takeaways in your apprenticeship journey so far?

The most significant takeaways from my apprenticeship journey so far have been the cultivation of confidence, patience, determination, and perseverance. I feel my role has really brought me out of my shell, in more ways than one, I’ve gained skills that are not only valuable in the workplace but are transferable across many areas of life.

Developing my skills within communication has also been a big one, particularly when it comes to my role – strong communication and people skills are crucial.

What is your advice for someone considering an apprenticeship?

My advice is to go for it - just take the plunge! If you’re more practical and prefer a hands-on approach to learning, it’s a great option for you. The experience you gain is truly invaluable, providing a strong foundation for a secure career path.

One standout feature and perhaps the most important, particularly with CPW, is the mentorship you receive - you’re learning from industry experts with years of experience. It's an opportunity to absorb knowledge, gain different perspectives, and receive one-on-one guidance, all of which are invaluable.
