Teaming up with Leicestershire Cares to deliver work experience

CPW has joined forces with Leicestershire Cares to offer work experience as part of their VIP project. One VIP participant had a background in retail, but expressed an interest in engineering and sustainable buildings. Leicestershire Cares approached Leicester Director John Hauton and he facilitated a week of work experience for the young participant, taking her through what she could expect from a career in MEP engineering.

John Hauton said: “It’s been great to be involved in this project and support a young person to discover new skills and an interest in engineering. I was really impressed with the participant’s enthusiasm and hope she considers a future in engineering and sustainability, as she certainly has a talent.

“Work experience is a brilliant tool for helping young people to test out different career paths and we hope to inspire the next generation to design sustainably, using innovative techniques to reduce our industry’s impact.”

The VIP Project has been commissioned by the Violence Reduction Network as part of The Reach Custody Project, which is funded by the Home Office. The key objective is to reduce re-offending and equip young people aged 11-25 with the skills they need to lead successful lives. This project supports young people to access and achieve sustained education, training and employment opportunities.

The participant said: “It went amazing, everyone is really nice and supportive. I learnt how to make drawings of buildings on the CAD software, it’s very interesting. I tried my hardest this week and I really enjoyed myself. I want to thank you for this experience. It was amazing and I had a great time.”

Youth Justice Project Development Manager at Leicestershire Cares, Chikodi Oraka, added: “I am truly grateful to have met and worked with John Hauton thus far. When we met for our initial career talk, he was engaging and this of course piqued the interest of my VIP participant.

“John was extremely efficient and made every effort to accommodate our participant whilst ensuring that she received an educational experience overall. John was flexible and responded promptly to queries, making the process a smooth one. The VIP participant and I are truly grateful to John and CPW. We look forward to working more closely with CPW.”
