Nursing and Allied Health Facility
Client: Newman University
Our Approach
The brief
This newly refurbished building at Newman University (Bartley Green Campus) provides state-of-the-art nursing and physiotherapy facilities for the department of Nursing and Allied Health.
As well as multiple skills laboratories, it includes an immersive space designed to recreate the experience of working in a busy healthcare environment, using enhanced virtual realism to train and teach students.
This space required detailed and careful coordination to accommodate the extensive engineering services in the restricted void space. Particular attention was paid to locating engineering terminals, data and audio-visual components to enable and optimise the virtual environment. Integrating innovative technology into the design to improve learning outcomes was achieved whilst delivering a very fast programme for both design and installation.
CPW provided a full MEP service to the university which included delivering the heating, cooling, ventilation, small power/data and lighting among a range of wider requirements.
Working towards decarbonisation
The university aims to decarbonise by 2040. To support this, the heating and hot water were generated using new air source heat pumps with ultra-low carbon emissions.
The performance of the existing building fabric was carefully considered with a view to minimising the heating flow temperature and hence maximising the seasonal efficiency of the heat pumps, so that carbon emission reduction was achieved.
Timeline challenges
The timing of the project created significant problems with the procurement of plant and equipment. However, through excellent communication and teamwork, the challenging programme was achieved to the client’s satisfaction.
