Library Refurbishment

Client: University of Reading

Our Approach

The University of Reading approached CPW to upgrade its 1960s five-storey library building to meet the growing demands of students - and significantly reduce its carbon footprint.

We modified the locally listed building while it was still being used, re-cladding the exterior to form a striking new focal point of the campus. We added an innovative new double skin glazing system with a high solar shading, which had two key benefits - reducing solar gain and the need for cooling.

Our team worked hard to significantly enhance the building’s environmental standards, incorporating new window designs to add energy efficient glazing and bask spaces in natural light.

Installing LED lights transformed the interior environment and aesthetic for library users, providing a vivid display of the building’s contents. A vastly improved heating emitter design allows for drastically improved heating system efficiency.

We’re proud that our work radically reduced the building’s carbon footprint, upgrading its performance from a Display Energy Certificate of F to B and shrinking its running costs.
