Redwoods Centre
Client: South Staffordshire & Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
Our Approach
The Redwoods Centre is a whole new way to deliver in-patient mental health services via a care village concept which moves away from the former Shelton Hospital’s institutional feel offers a high quality, comfortable caring environment.
All buildings in this state-of-the-art facility are linked by pathways through beautiful and carefully landscaped gardens to provide a village green feel in a relaxed environment.
We drove energy efficiency with a combination of measures including summertime temperature control using heavyweight exposed mass as well as passive solutions for ventilation, ensuring that the village uses as little energy as possible.
Heating was provided from a CHP unit and routed via underground ‘district heating’ pipes to individual block, each regulating its own usage.
This successful scheme has rooms for 80 patients and a low secure unit built around individual secure gardens houses a further 32 patients. A central two storey building accommodates specialist treatment areas, a gym, and bistro.
The project achieved BREEAM Excellent rating
