Avni's Journey with CPW’s Sustainability Team

At CPW, we believe in nurturing young talent and providing invaluable real-world experiences. Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting Avni, a bright and enthusiastic secondary school student, for a work experience placement at our Solihull office, with our Sustainability Team. Here is a glimpse into Avni’s exciting journey with us and the insights she gained along the way.

What was your Work Experience like at CPW?

I experienced life in a professional Engineering Design office in Solihull. My dad and I set off around 7am from Grantham to the West Midlands, encountering two major traffic incidents along the way. Fortunately, we still arrived on time!

CPW is a company which consists of Mechanical and Electrical engineers, who bring buildings to life, in ways that are better for our environment.

They provide bespoke solutions across a wide range of market sectors, tackling all manner of challenges and building types.

The company has many different teams, working on a variety of projects - but I was working with the Sustainability Team. This team supports clients and the other departments within the company, to make building projects more sustainable and lowering carbon emissions. They achieve this by using renewable energy sources, cutting down the use of fossil fuels and passive engineering techniques.

Activities Taken Part In

I took part in numerous activities, including one which focused on reducing carbon emissions in buildings. I used bespoke industry compliance software to transfer information for a building design, which determined how much carbon emissions the building would release.

I found it interesting to learn that there are effective ways to reduce emissions and that many people are actively working towards this goal. We just need to find a way to implement these solutions globally!

Learning Outcome

I learned that the qualifications needed to become a Sustainability Consultant include a Master’s or Graduate Degree in Sustainable Energy and the Environment. After becoming a consultant, you can progress to Senior Consultant, Associate, and eventually Associate Director.

In the future, I can see CPW becoming even more diverse and continuing to push for a Carbon Net-Zero future.

From experiencing the world of work, I have learned that any new job can be tough at first, but pushing through is key to reaching your full potential. If you aim to progress, taking on more responsibility is essential!

I have also learned that passion is crucial, and that choosing a career you are genuinely passionate about is important.

Being in this environment has given me insight into what it’s like to work in a professional office. Whether it’s a path I want to pursue or not, I’m still unsure. However, I will remember this experience in the future as I explore my career options.
