Becoming a CPW apprentice: Jibran Ahmed

With apprenticeship roles currently on offer across our UK offices, we sat down with one of our current apprentices, Jibran Ahmed, to hear more about his experience of the CPW apprenticeship scheme so far.

What is your role and what does it involve?

“I am a trainee design engineer in the Leeds office who is electrically biased. My role involves design work from an electrical standpoint alongside my mentor, such as the positioning, strip outs and coordination of sockets, spurs, data outlets and luminaire locations, for example.

“I also occasionally go on site visits where I have gained hands-on experience and grasped a practical understanding of the work we design in action.”

What led you to apply for an apprenticeship?

“When I was considering whether to go to university, go straight into work or sign up for an apprenticeship, apprenticeships stuck out for me because of the balance of hands-on experience and the chance to get a taste of working life.

“It also seemed like a great opportunity to study and gain knowledge of the industry. Apprenticeships are the perfect bridge to develop yourself on a personal and academic level, whilst also understanding the world of work, placing you in a more advantageous position.”

What attracted you to CPW?

“The first thing I did before applying for an apprenticeship at CPW was research their online reviews. From this I quickly learnt that they treat their workforce as a family and are extremely loyal and supportive of their staff.

“My personal experience at CPW has far exceeded my expectations; members of staff have gone out of their way to welcome and include me. CPW truly do treat me as part of the family, both in my local office and across the wider business.”

What's the best thing about being an apprentice at CPW?

“The staff, first and foremost, are the frontline of this company and totally represent CPW to the fullest. Being an apprentice, I was apprehensive that I wasn’t going to pick things up as quickly as I would like, however the team are extremely supportive and helped me unlock my full potential.

As an apprentice, you start with the basic fundamentals, so it is important that the right company mentors you. The training and CPD’s that CPW offer ensure I am learning and continuously growing as an individual and also as an apprentice.”

What would you say to someone thinking about joining CPW?

“If you want to be the best at what you do, learn from the best. Joining CPW was one of the greatest choices I ever made and I haven’t looked back since.”
